Welcome to The Ceramistry
Why do I call my studio ‘The Ceramistry’?
Making ceramics is like a creative, playful, scientific experiment.
And my studio is where the magic happens.
Constantly experimenting/exploring
There’s something I love about each piece, but I have an ongoing urge to constantly improve, or modify something every time. Maybe change the angle of this line here, reduce the amount of clay by 5gms, make the foot slightly deeper, or add 2% more dolomite to the slip, or let the kiln seep for 5 minutes more. It’s like making the perfect cake – where every ingredient plays it’s own part, and the flavours need to sing together.
I can throw hundreds of bowls – and they may all appear to be the same, but I can see all the variations in every single one – and never tire of throwing one hundred more to keep striving for that new perfection. Along the way, things get modified/tweaked/enhanced. The next hundred will be slightly different. It’s as if each piece represents a stage/moment in my creative journey.
About my pieces
I used fine white porcelain, and a variety of glazes and slips that I mix myself.
On the inside – I use flat smooth glazes – that are food friendly.
On the outside - at the moment I’m enjoying exploring a crackle glaze – that will crackle more over time, which enhances each pieces individuality. These crackles don’t effect the function of an item.
Each item goes off, and then back on, the wheel during the various stages. Some only 4 times – others up to 12 depending on how many steps in the process to getting each item ‘just right’.
